Major renovations set to begin at CMURC facility

Board of Trustees approves updates to enhance coworking space + community

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich., April 20, 2023 – Over the last five years, Central Michigan University Research Corporation (CMURC) has made substantial investments throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region, and it is now time to escalate the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Mount Pleasant. Today, the CMU Board of Trustees approved a resolution to allow contracting authority for the renovation of CMURC Mt Pleasant. Updates will include the remodeling of the RC coworking space and business accelerator.

The proposed project will update approximately 11,500 square feet of the existing coworking space in the facility. This will allow the office space to better serve small businesses and entrepreneurial startups by creating private offices, dedicated desks, a café for gatherings, and state-of-the-art meeting rooms equipped for seamless virtual conferencing.

"CMURC recently celebrated 20 years of service to the entrepreneurial community,” said President + CEO of CMURC Erin Strang. “The RC has a place for all levels of entrepreneurs, and we would like to create a community that makes it easy for everyone to collaborate and grow.”

As a professional destination for entrepreneurs, small businesses, professional service providers and corporations in the Great Lakes Bay Region, CMURC offers a range of workspace solutions and program opportunities. The renovations will build on the organization’s current success, ensuring that members have access to the latest technology and amenities, and a modern and comfortable workspace.

“Through CMU and CMURC, we are committed to building and fostering an ecosystem of innovation and economic development in communities throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region,” said CMU President Bob Davies, chairperson of the CMURC Board of Directors. “This project will allow us to further extend our reach and levels of service, creating an even richer environment for entrepreneurship.”

An RFP calling local general contractors is slated to be released in May, with construction set to begin in June of 2023. The development of the project is made possible in part through funding from the Economic Development Administration, Consumers Energy Foundation and Mt Pleasant Area Community Foundation.
