Central Michigan University (CMU) and Central Michigan University Research Corporation (CMURC) officially launched the Central Ecosystem for National Security (CENS) on October 17, highlighting the new Critical Materials Lab and its role in supporting research, technology development and innovation related to national security.

CENS is bringing together Michigan’s academic, industry, and innovation assets through a national security lens to advance applied research, technology validation, workforce development, and commercialization.

“CENS creates an opportunity to bring together the people, expertise and resources needed to turn innovative ideas into solutions that address critical national security challenges,” said President + CEO of CMURC Erin Strang. “By connecting our university, industry and regional partners, we can strengthen Michigan’s role in the national security innovation ecosystem while creating new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs across our state.”

The Critical Materials Lab will be a shared-use resource focused on strengthening capabilities in critical minerals and materials, next-generation battery storage, advanced energy technologies, testing, and validation.

“Research into critical minerals is essential to strengthening our national security, supporting economic growth and creating jobs,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “The collaboration between academic and industry leaders will help advance research and testing, develop our domestic capabilities in this vital industry, and create new workforce opportunities for the next generation here in rural Michigan. As the only member of the House Appropriations Committee from our state, I was proud to secure federal funding for CMU's Central Ecosystem for National Security.”

CENS is supported by 15 founding members committed to advancing Michigan’s role in the national security and defense innovation ecosystem. Founding members include Aim Targeted Intelligence, All Domain Consulting, Bakinaw Federal Contracting, Cytta Air Corp, DLW & Associates, Geomesh, Ghostlure, Michigan Drone Association, Mid-Michigan Manufacturers Association, Mirus Technology, Prescott, Protocol Direction, SAPA Transmission, SBR Tech, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Through collaboration among research institutions, industry, government and entrepreneurs, CENS aims to advance mission-relevant technologies, develop the future workforce, and help national security-focused ventures move toward commercialization. Visit cmurc.com/cens to get involved.
