MY “AHA” MOMENT:
After speaking with campground owners and their staff at a 2016 Camper and RV expo I found that there was only one campground in the area that offered naturalist programs to the public, and those were only open in the summer months. Throughout these conversations I was told numerous times “you should start an environmentalist program and go campground to campground.” The owners said an environmentalist program would excel and they offered their assistance getting it started. Although I do not have a business yet, Lake of Dreams Campground in Merrill, MI has become my first client.
THE BIG IDEA:
Traveling to regional venues, I facilitate hands-on science programs that include: the water cycle, tree identification and growth, soil science, food webs and much more. My career focus and expertise is in the field of environmental science and engineering. I am currently only conducting science programs on campgrounds, but I can take them to anyone interested.
WHY MY IDEA IS BETTER THAN THE REST:
While there are many state campgrounds and national parks that already have these programs, I would like to bring them to family campgrounds, schools, local parks and science centers. I even hope to bring science to your backyard.
THE SKY'S THE LIMIT:
The funds obtained through the CMURC Exchange program will provide the resources to get me started and take me in the right direction. As business expands, I will seek local tenancy where people can come to me when they do not have a venue. I also aspire to become a non-profit, developing school programs and assisting others when needed.
