MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich., August 14, 2017 – Central Michigan University Research Corporation will be recognized for its regional work and support for entrepreneurs when it receives the Partners in Growth Small Business Award at the Great Lakes Bay Regional Chamber Summit later this week. The organization has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs in the region establish companies, create new ideas and jobs.
The award highlights groups or individuals leading initiatives to improve communities. CMURC — a coworking space, incubator and accelerator established nearly two decades ago through a Michigan Economic Development Corporation initiative — has grown as a hub for business development. In March 2017, CMURC expanded from the Mount Pleasant location to open a second facility in Uptown Bay City and announced a future third location in downtown Saginaw’s SVRC Marketplace.
“We’re proud to enhance communities through CMURC’s impact on small businesses and its ability to help forge partnerships with the university," Central Michigan University President and CMURC Chair George E. Ross said. “CMURC and Central Michigan University share a united commitment to continuing the growth and further expanding the influence of the Great Lakes Bay Region. We thank the chambers for this honor.”
In the past three years alone, the organization has helped develop more than 130 companies, 39 patents and 359 jobs. More than 80 percent of the companies worked with are still in business and pursuing growth — a rate above the national small business success rate. These results have earned CMURC recognition as one of the state’s top performing SmartZones in categories of MEDC’s economic impact metrics.
“This acknowledgement is a great accomplishment for our team. We are fortunate to guide passionate entrepreneurs and small businesses. It is their success that economically drives our communities,” CMURC President + CEO Erin Strang said. “We look forward to many more years serving them and being a place where business comes together for the Great Lakes Bay Region.”
The Partners in Growth Small Business Award is presented by the Bay Area, Midland Area, Mount Pleasant Area and Saginaw Area Chambers of Commerce. Past recipients include Two Men and a Truck, Shaheen Development and Associated Builders and Contractors.
The Great Lakes Bay Regional Chamber Summit will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. August 17 at the Great Hall Banquet and Convention Center in Midland.
