Location Intelligence
The CMU Research Corp. relies on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a
powerful business intelligence tool, using information to display layers of
data over a common
location reference point or area. For instance, GIS
technologies may be used to map a company's distribution of sales by zip
code, or combine advanced satellite imagery with
roads and new home growth.
GIS technologies have powerful tools for entering and manipulating
geographic information such as addresses or political boundaries, and
utilizes its own database management system. The technology is an excellent
tool for
the creation of intelligent digital maps used for analysis and
presentation. At CMU-RC,
we've found that combining business intelligence
and GIS tools creates entirely new applications for predictive modeling and
spatial analysis.
A simple example would involve using census data, weather information, and
soils
databases
to predict the best places for successful sales of new golf course or lawn
care products. Additionally, GIS technologies could be used to analyze
demographic information
in the population data to direct marketing and
promotional activities toward communities
most likely
to contract for lawn service.
